Chp.10- Racism and Prejudice- Case Study Report

1. Statement of the Problem
A. Definition
Francine was a sophomore transfer student from Illinois. She met Tony, an African-American at her university in Louisiana. One day Tony asked Francine out to the bookstore and to have a cup of coffee. When they walked into the bookstore, some of the students cast glances at them disdainfully and even said something rude. However, those prejudice behaviors made no sense to Francine. She still went out with Tony no matter how other students thought about the relationship between Tony and her. As days passed by, whenever Francine and Tony hung out together, they were always disturbed by other students’ disrespectful words and even some physical conflicts. Although Francine‘s self-confidence was high and she was seldom affected by others’ opinions, she finally could not endure this kind of situation anymore. She could not believe that there is so much racial prejudice still existed.

B. Analysis
Francine and Tony belong to different races. Francine is from Illinois; however, Tony is an African-American. Their relationship was disturbed by other students’ prejudiced words. As a result, Francine was annoyed and desperate about the situation they faced.

2. Suggestion of Possible Solutions
(1).Francine and Tony do not have to care about what other students’ thought about their relationship. Keep their relationship.
(2). Francine should break up with Tony.
(3). Francine and Tony should tell university officers about the situation they faced.

3. Evaluation of Possible Solutions
(1). Advantage: By building their relationship well, they can prove to other students that there is no conflict between two different races.
Disadvantage: They will be still disturbed by others.
(2). Advantage: Once they separate, there will be no prejudiced words or physical conflicts between them.
Disadvantage: They cannot get along with each other.
(3). Advantage: University officers will give them some advises and build their confidence about their relationship.
Disadvantage: Other students will still continue disturbing Tony and Francine.

4. Selection of a Solution
A. Choice
Solution (1): Francine and Tony do not have to care about what other students’ thought about their relationship. Keep their relationship.
B. Justification
What Tony and Francine faced was a serious racial discrimination issue. No one can easily change other’s inherent thought. Even though Francine breaks up with Tony, the discrimination will still exist. Therefore, since the result will be the same no matter Tony and Francine separate or not, they will be much happier to get along with each other.

"Smoke Signals" Film Analysis Report

Summary and Analysis

Victor and Thomas are neighbors and they grew up together because of Victor’s father. Thomas was survived from a fire that killed his parents when he was an infant. The person who saved Thomas’s live was Victor’s father, Arnold. Therefore, Thomas extremely adores Arnold. However, Arnold is an alcoholic and violent person. He finally separated with Victor’s mother and left his family to Phoenix. Victor loves Arnold but also angers him.

One day, Victor decided to take a trip to Phoenix looking for Arnold. When Victor told Thomas about his plan to Phoenix, As a result, they went to Phoenix together. During the trip, they met other American people on the bus. They keep their Native American characteristics by talking to other American people with hard words and coldness. When they arrived their destination in Phoenix, they met a woman who used to work with Arnold. At that time, they knew that Arnold has already passed away. The woman told Victor a lot about Arnold’s story, including the truth that the fire was caused by Arnold. Victor finally realized why Arnold became an alcoholic, became violent and finally left his family.

Relation to Case Study

In chapter 10, Racism and Prejudice, the relationship between Francine and Tony was disturbed and annoyed by other students at university because of their different races. The similar situation related to prejudice is happened in this movie. When Victor and Thomas were on their way to Phoenix on the bus, Victor told Thomas that they should not be so friendly to others or others will not respect them. Also, Victor said that as being an American Indian, they should keep a “warrior face.” It is because of the prejudice from American people toward American Indians, Victor told Thomas to stand for their American Indian’s characteristics. Just like Tony told Francine not to be annoyed by others’ words and keep on their relationship.

Reaction to the movie

It is a big issue about different races both in chapter 10 and in this movie. Everyone should have his right to be treated fairly. Every person didn’t have chances to choose his race, skin color, and the language he speaks so no one should be prohibited doing something or building any relationship. Also, people do not have to change their native identity for others. Therefore, just like Victor and Thomas keep their identity as being American Indians, Francine and Tony should not separate by others’ judgements.

"Animal House" Film Analysis Report

Summary and Analysis
Kent and his friend, Larry, are two college freshmen. They were trying to get in a fraternity at their college. At first, they went into Omega house. The people there were mean to freshmen, they did not show respect to Kent and Larry. Then Kent and Larry tried the second fraternity house, Delta house. The Delta members were having a house party, drinking alcohol, playing music out loud, and taking drugs in the house. Differ from the members of Omega fraternity, the Delta members were friendly to freshmen. They invited Kent and Larry passionately into the house and introduced everyone to them. Afterward, Kent and Larry were given fraternity names as “Flounder” and “Pinto.” They were having fun in that house.
However, Dean Vernon Wormer was trying to remove Delta from campus because they violated campus rules over and over again. Although Delta fraternity was ranked as “Double Secret Probation,” they still acted as usual. One day, two of Delta members, Bluto and D-Day, found the answers of an upcoming test in a garbage can. All Delta students were using that answers cheating on the test. Unfortunately, the answers were revised by the Omega students. Eventually, all Delta students got extremely low grade points. Moreover, they all failed on the midterm exam. Therefore, they are all expelled from school by Wormer. In the end, Deltas gave rise to a chaos on the school annual parade.

Relation to Case Study
In chapter three, Maria was a college freshman that it was her first time being away from home. She was excited to have a college life in the United State and looking forward to have a great dormitory life. When she met her roommate, Jenny, she felt lucky that Jenny was a friendly and lovely person. However, getting to know each other deeply, Maria could not stand that Jenny usually brought her boyfriend back to her room and messed the room up. Finally, she wanted to move out. Compare with the spot in the movie-Animal House- the same situation happened with Kent and Larry. They were excited about joining into a fraternity. To determine from two fraternities, they went to those two fraternity houses. Just like choosing a suitable roommate, Kent and Larry finally joined the Delta fraternity.

Reaction to the movie
It’s not easy to find someone match us in any aspects, especially in life habit. If there’s any conflict between others and us, we should talk with each other and settle the problems with an agreement. Reduce the conflicts to the least
.

"Animal House" debate Outline

I agree with removing Delta fraternity from campus.
a. They made some troubles and hurt other students.
Ex: They hurt Doug’s neck in horse riding class.
b. They break the campus rules.
Ex: smoke, drink alcohol, drugs.
c. Damage the campus environment.
Ex: Food fighting, throw bottles randomly.
d. They didn’t pay attention to the classes.
Ex: they all failed in the test.
e. Affected other students.
Ex: they made noise such as broke windows, riding motorcycle in the house, played music loud.

Chp.3- Roommate Relations- Case Study Report

1. Statement of the Problem
A. Definition
Maria is an international student from Venezuela. It was her first time coming to the United State and had been far away from her family and friends. She was looking forward to beginning a new life and making friends in the U.S. Maria was lucky that she met Jenny, her roommate, a warm and lovely person. However, there were some different habits between them. Jenny loved hard rock music and she did not mind a messy room. In contrast, Maria hated hard rock music and she could not stand disorder. Worst of all, Jenny usually brought her boyfriend to her room. In Maria’s perception, premarital sex is a sin, so she was amazed by their behavior. She didn’t understand why American college students can regard this behavior as a common. Therefore, she turned to her friend, Elena, told her things about Jenny. Maria stayed with Elena at one night Jenny brought her boyfriend to her room again. In the next morning, when Maria went back to her room, I was total in a mess. Finally, Maria could not stand this situation anymore.
B. Analysis
Maria faced the different dormitory culture in college life. She could not get used to the American dormitory culture. She did not like that Jenny brought her boyfriend to her room. Premarital sex was regarded a sin in her country. At last, she wanted to go back home.
2. Suggestion of Possible Solutions
a. Move out to Elena’s room.
b. Talk with Jenny about the problems.
c. Go to sleep with Elena at the nights that Jenny’s boyfriend comes to visit Jenny.

3. Evaluation of Possible Solutions
a. Advantage: Maria will no longer endure Jenny’s messy room, rock music, and her boyfriend.
Disadvantage: Bring inconvenience to Elena.

b. Advantage: Maria and Jenny can set up a best agreement after talking the problems with each other.
Disadvantage: Jenny maybe feels upset that Maria is so picky to her.

c. Advantage: Maria will not be disturbed by them.
Disadvantage: Jenny’s boyfriend will come to visit Jenny more often since they have private space.

4. Selection of a Solution

Choose solution b.
Any problems should come with discussions. When we have conflicts with others, we should talk to them about our own feelings and thoughts. Then make an agreement with each other since there is a mutual perception. Afterward, we will face the same situation with ease. Therefore, Setting up an agreement is the best way to solve conflicting problems.

"Animal House" Summary of opening scene

In the beginning of this movie, Kent and his friend was walking in campus and finding fraternities to join. They went to the first fraternity house, Omega, the people there were just having some conversations with drinks and showed no interest in them. However, when Kent and his friend came to the second fraternity house, Delta, the people there were so friendly and showed their enthusiasm to Kent. In Delta fraternity house, all the people were crazy drinking, smoking, playing poker, and even riding a motorcycle inside the house. Kent and his friend were having a great time there.

I will join Delta because the members were kind to new freshmen. Although they did some crazy things, but their enthusiasm and friendliness make me feel comfortable. Nevertheless, Omega fraternity didn’t show any respect to freshmen, they looked like they always judge a book by its cover. If I join into Omega fraternity, I will feel painful and unhappy. Thus, I will choose Delta fraternity.

Chp.9- Plagiarism- Case Study Report

1. Statement of The Problem
A: Definition
Igor was anxious about his twenty-five-page paper that he wanted to get an excellent grade on the paper but it’s near the due date. Worst of all, writing has been extremely difficult for him. Therefore, he turned to ask his friend, George, for help. George gave Igor a paper with the same topic as Igor’s paper. Finally, Igor turned it in to his professor. The next day professor gave Igor a piece of paper about the University Academic Integrity Policy and warned him of the behavior of plagiarism.

B: Analysis
Although Igor realized that if professor found out that he did not write the paper by himself, he would be expelled from his school. Under the stress of deadline, Igor plagiarized on his paper, and did not tell the truth to his professor at first. Finally he regretted about his plagiarism behavior.

2. Suggestion of Possible Solutions
(1). Ask professor for another chance.
(2). Tell professor the truth in the beginning.
(3). Igor can reference George’s paper and turn it into his words.

3. Evaluation of possible Solutions
(1). Advantage: He can get another chance from professor to make up his fault.
Disadvantage: He may not have time to do the new research paper.
(2). Advantage: He can get another chance to make up the plagiarism.
Disadvantage: He will not get a new chance because he makes professor much angry.
(3). Advantage: He can make his paper done before the deadline, and he accomplishes his paper with his words.
Disadvantage: He may not have time to think about how to do with his paper.

4. Selection of a Solution
A. Choice
Solution (3): Igor can reference George’s paper and turn it into his words.

B. Justification
Reference other’s paper can make him having much more ideas about the topic of his paper. In this way, he can submit his research paper in time without plagiarizing, and will not make the problem of plagiarism. Thus, the best solution is to reference other’s paper and turn it into his own words.

Chp.4- Time Management- debate

I agree with the best solution for Rajesh to ride a bike to school every morning. His main problem is that he cannot catch the buses to school so that he is always late for class. The professor, therefore, is mad at his behavior of being late. If Rajesh could catch up the buses every morning then he won't be called to professor's office, and he won’t be late again for the meeting with his professor as well.

First, if Rajesh rides a bike to school every morning, he has to get up very early because riding a bike to school will spend a lot of time. Therefore, he could have much time to get ready to school and then he could be in class in time. Second, riding a bike can make him healthier since he often goes to clubs or parties at night and gets home late. Finally, riding a bike can have many advantages such as saving money, protecting environment, and saving industrial energy.

A bike doesn’t need gasoline and car insurance, so it could save money. Also, a bike does not use any industrial energy, so riding a bike can save global energy and then protect environment. Thus, riding a bike will gain some benefits.

In conclusion, Rajesh should ride a bike to school so that he will not be late for class. Also, he could gain benefits from it such as getting healthy and saving his money. Thus, riding a bike to school is the best way for Rajesh to solve his problem.

"stand and deliver" Film Analysis Report

Summary and Analysis

Mr.Escalante gave up his engineer job for being a teacher at Garfield High School in Los Angeles County. There is not any computer at this school, and the school had no money to improve its equipment. Therefore, Mr. Escalante could not teach computer science at school, he finally turned into a math teacher.

The students there were undervalued and were not praised by other teachers at this school; however, Mr. Escalante trusted that he could make those students progress in their studies. As couple months passed by, he was able to win over the attention of the students by implementing innovative teaching strategies. Finally, Mr. Escalante decided to teach them calculus.

All the students took Mr. Escalante’s calculus class on summer and then they took test for the first time. As a result, they all passed the test. However, the inspectors of the test doubted about their scores because they found that those students made similar errors on the test. Mr. Escalante went to argue with inspectors and requested to retest the students. Ultimately, those students proved their competence by passing the test again.

Relation to Case Study

In the case study from Unit 1 and in this movie, we can see that both teachers were trying to make students improve in their studies, and there are both misunderstandings which related to students. Mei's teacher, Ms. Kramer, suggested Mei's to rewrite her paper and participate more in class to make up her grade on midterm exam. However, Mei made a misunderstanding that she thought Ms. Kramer will fail her, so she finally gave up this class. The similar situation between Ms. Kramer and Mr. Escalante is that Mr. Escalante tried to advance his students to pass the national calculus test, and used exotic ways to teach them. The misunderstanding in this move is happened between inspectors and students that inspectors adoubted that the students cheated on the test.

Reaction to the movie

There are always tough students at every school, so teachers must have different teaching skills to teach different students. Thus, when students meet problems, teachers can use appropriate ways to help them.

Chp.1- Motivation- Case Study Report

1. Statement of The Problem
A: Definition
Mei Chang had partisipating problem in the class discussions, and also had trouble with writing assignment. After midterm exam, Mei got average C minus. Her teacher, Mr. Kramer, told her to raise her average by rewriting her papers and speaking up in class, but Mei started to skip from the class and did not complete the writing assignments in the second half of the semester. Ultimately, Mei argued with Ms. Kramer and she made a misunderstanding about what Ms. Kramer said. She thought Ms. Kramer will fail her so she gave up the course.

B: Analysis
After Mei got C minus after midterm exam, she started to skip classes. She totally gave up her reading and writing class that she even did not strive to make up her bad grade.

2. Suggestion of Possible Solutions
A: Solution 1. To ask more questions in class
B: Solution 2. Improving writing skills by reading more extra curricular books or news papers.
C: Solution 3. Show much respect to Ms. Kramer and ask questions about how to write an essay during Ms. Kramer's office hour.

3. Evaluation of possible Solutions
A. Solution 1.
*Advantage: Eventhough she sometimes does not understand what other people are saying, she can ask questions in class. It will increase her participation in class and she will feel more confident on speaking in the class.
*Disadvantage: By this way, she will not improve her listening and writing skills, so she will still cannot understand what others say or still do not know how to write an essay.

B. Solution 2.
*Advantage: Reading more books or papers will know what the structure of essay is and how to write an essay. By this way, Mei can improve her writing skills.
*Disadvantage: She maybe had not enough time to read extra curricular books not to mention doing her writing assignment.

C. Solution 3.
*Advantage: She can improve her writing skills by asking teachers privately during office hour. *Disadvantage: Mei may feels stressful because she seems like that she can not sustain any pressure.

4. Selection of a Solution
A. Choise
Solution 2

B. Justification
Compared with all of Mei's problem, most problems can be solved easily, however, writing is Mei's hardest problem to solve. Thus, she should improve her writing skills by way of reading more articles and papers.

"Lost in Translation" Film Analysis Report

Summary and Analysis

Bob is a movie star that he went to Tokyo to film a whisky advertisement. He faced culture shock in Tokyo, and he even did not know what the director of advertising tried to guide him. Every midnight, he just cannot fell asleep. Charlotte stayed in the same hotel as Bob with her husband, Harris, a busy and workaholic photographer, and not only cannot understand Japanese language but also cannot get used to the Japanese culture just like Bob did. Charlotte became unsure about her future and the man she married. One night she met Bob in the bar of the hotel where they built up their friendship.
They hung around in Tokyo streets together, and experienced the differences between American and Japanese culture. A subtle affection gradually developed between them. One night, Bob hook up with the resident vocalist of the hotel bar and slept with her. Conflict is generated since next morning Charlotte saw Bob naked and heard the vocalist was singing in his room. But later that night, because of a fire alarm, they realized how they miss each other and reconciled finally.
Bob finished his work and had to return back to America next morning. On his departure in the way to airport, he saw Charlotte walked on a crowded street alone. He got off his car and ran to Charlotte, and then he embraced her in whisper. Bob kissed and expressed his emotion to Charlotte and then departed.

Relation to Case Study

In case study 12, Dita suffered from culture shock when she went to college in the United State. She did not like the American food, cannot understand the professor's lecture in the class, and cannot make American friends because of totally different customs. The same situation was happened between Bob and Charlotte, they cannot get used to the surroundings in Tokyo. They did not know Japanese language and cannot adapt to the instruments in the hotel and the different lifestyle.

Reaction to Film

I like this movie because it not only talks about the culture shock but also the subtle affection between people. People go to different country will face the different lifestyle and language barrier. Everything seems so hard to get used to it, so it is important to make friends experiencing those difficulties together. By this way, we will not feel lonely in foreign country and will have positive attitude toward our problems. Just like Bob and Charlotte experienced the differences between Japanese and American culture together, Dita should make some friends either from her home country or foreign country.

Chp.12- Culture Shock- Debate

I agree with the solution of the difficulties that Dita faced. To make some international students who are from Indonesia is the fastest way to solve her problems. By this way, she can save her time to get used to the circumstances, make other friends easier, improve her English listening and speaking skills, and probably get some food she likes.

Making friends who are from the same home country can settle the linguistic problem, so if she makes some Indonesian friends, she could ask them for solutions about her problems in school. They can deal with her daily worry and make her getting used to the circumstances faster.

As long as she has Indonesian friends, she will not feel lonely. She can also meet other friends by those Indonesian friends. Ultimately, she could make lots of friends who are not only from Indonesia but also are from any other courtries. By the same token, she could improve her English listening and speaking skills by talking with her friends, and then she will be more confident and easy in classes.

She lost her weights since she got United State due to the food in the college cafeteria is never tasted right to her. This problem will probably be solved by the Indonesian friends. They come from the same country, so they have the same culture, custom, and food. Indonesian friends could tell her where can get the food they like, or just share delicious food with her. In this way, she will not always eat hamburgers or chicken sandwiches.

In conclusion, making Indonesian friends is the best way to solve Dita's problems. She will get better in United State college, and finish her B.A. degree in communication.

Chp.12- Culture Shock- Case Study Report

1.(1) * She has a problem of listening English.

* She lost her initial passion for getting college in United States, and forgot how she treasured this opportunity.
* She cannot persist in welcoming challenges with her optimistic and enthusiastic personality.
* She is too passive that she always waits for someone to ask her out, so she hardly can make friends.

(2) The main problem is that she can't make friends. If she can make some friends and then other problems will no longer exist.

2. Solution 1. Be active in inviting others to do some activities.

advantage: It can start conversations with others so that she can impress others by her enthusiastic personality.

disadvantage: Others are may not interested in the activities, she will feel depressed when they adject her invitation.

Solution 2. To have a social disposition in a group. Try to make a subject in group conversation that arisingeither others' or your interest.

advantage: It could chane the subject of the conversation you don't like and then keep the talking to go on.

disadvantage: It might interrupt the talking and generate an embarrassed atmosphere if they don't interest in your subject.

Solution 3. Overcome all problems and challenges with optimistic disposition.

advantage: You won't give up or be backward when tou face difficulty.

disadvantage: Too optimistic may cause you to underestimate the difficulty.

3. I choose Solution 1 to solve these problems since there's no disadvantage of solution 1 in my opinion. To be active in inviting others do some activities could definitely start a conversation with others, and then you can know much well about each other through the activities. Eventhough they reject your invitation, you still start a conversation with them. It's better than nothing.
