Chp.10- Racism and Prejudice- Case Study Report


1. Statement of the Problem
A. Definition
Francine was a sophomore transfer student from Illinois. She met Tony, an African-American at her university in Louisiana. One day Tony asked Francine out to the bookstore and to have a cup of coffee. When they walked into the bookstore, some of the students cast glances at them disdainfully and even said something rude. However, those prejudice behaviors made no sense to Francine. She still went out with Tony no matter how other students thought about the relationship between Tony and her. As days passed by, whenever Francine and Tony hung out together, they were always disturbed by other students’ disrespectful words and even some physical conflicts. Although Francine‘s self-confidence was high and she was seldom affected by others’ opinions, she finally could not endure this kind of situation anymore. She could not believe that there is so much racial prejudice still existed.


B. Analysis
Francine and Tony belong to different races. Francine is from Illinois; however, Tony is an African-American. Their relationship was disturbed by other students’ prejudiced words. As a result, Francine was annoyed and desperate about the situation they faced.

2. Suggestion of Possible Solutions
(1).Francine and Tony do not have to care about what other students’ thought about their relationship. Keep their relationship.
(2). Francine should break up with Tony.
(3). Francine and Tony should tell university officers about the situation they faced.

3. Evaluation of Possible Solutions
(1). Advantage: By building their relationship well, they can prove to other students that there is no conflict between two different races.
Disadvantage: They will be still disturbed by others.
(2). Advantage: Once they separate, there will be no prejudiced words or physical conflicts between them.
Disadvantage: They cannot get along with each other.
(3). Advantage: University officers will give them some advises and build their confidence about their relationship.
Disadvantage: Other students will still continue disturbing Tony and Francine.

4. Selection of a Solution
A. Choice
Solution (1): Francine and Tony do not have to care about what other students’ thought about their relationship. Keep their relationship.
B. Justification
What Tony and Francine faced was a serious racial discrimination issue. No one can easily change other’s inherent thought. Even though Francine breaks up with Tony, the discrimination will still exist. Therefore, since the result will be the same no matter Tony and Francine separate or not, they will be much happier to get along with each other.
